How do you get licensed?

 

According to the NCEES site there is a 4-step process. This is a general outline of the steps, as each state and territory uses its’ own process to obtain your Professional Land Surveyors license. With this in mind, the NCEES site outlines the following 4 steps:

 

Step 1: Education
Step 2: Fundementals of Surveying (FS) Exam
Step 3: Work Experience
Step 4: Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) Exam

Local Professional Land Surveying Licensure Requirements.

 

Generally, after completing the above steps and passing the mandetory tests, you will then be required to take a local test specifically covering your knowledge of that individual states professional land surveying laws and practices. As an example, in Rhode Island you would be required to take a state prepared test covering colonial law and surveying and professional land surveying laws specific to the State of Rhode Island.

If you have gone through all of the above steps and passed your professional land surveyors examinations, congratulation! – Now you can continue your journey as a licensed professional. Depending on the state or territory you get licensed in, you may be able to add the following titles to your name; and whichever is appropriate, use it with pride:

 

  • Professional Land Surveyor (P.L.S.).
  • Professional Surveyor (P.S.).
  • Professional Surveyor and Mapper (P.S.M.).
  • Land Surveyor (L.S.).
