I Will Be Neither An AutoCAD Civil 3D Cheerleader Or Apologist
On a regular basis, I'm either presented with the opportunity to talk with you about AutoCAD Civil 3D or I'm motivated to share with you some AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge or information. My focus on AutoCAD Civil 3D, more than the other available land surveying/CAD software packages, might lead you to believe that I think that Civil 3D is the best or only software that you should use. Nothing could be further from the truth, as I'm neither an AutoCAD Civil 3D cheerleader or apologist.
Listen, like many of you, I paid for and use AutoCAD Civil 3D in my professional land surveying practice. Therefore, it's what I know. And, because so many of you also use AutoCAD Civil 3D, the need for learning how to use this specific software package is a void I happily like to fill.
But, I do not for one minute think that Civil 3D is the only tool you can use, or should choose to use! Which land surveying or design software is right for you or your business is an important decision. Get that decision right, and you or your company will excel and flourish. Make the wrong choice, however, and your selected software will bury you in added cost and inefficiencies.
I'm sure each of the various land surveying or CAD software packages can get the job done and each has its own unique strengths, and AutoCAD Civil 3D is no different in this regard. However, like every other software program you can buy, Civil 3D has plenty of weaknesses, too. So, you can look at any of my AutoCAD "self help" or "How To" articles or videos as either:
- Promoting the usefulness of AutoCAD Civil 3D, or
- Explaining how to work around some AutoCAD Civil 3D weakness or (unnecessary) complexity.
Probably, both are true!
The simple truth (for me, at least) is that AutoCAD Civil 3D is a powerful piece of software with many good features and is a tool suitable for professional land surveyors. Some of you happily drink the Autodesk kool-aid without much analysis and comparison to other products, some are forced to use AutoCAD Civil 3D due to contractual or company culture reasons, some of you have fully evaluated the land surveying and design software that is right for you and your company, and at least a few of you have shunned AutoCAD Civil 3D without any reasonable or coherent logic. Regardless of your decision, I doubt that you are happy with 100% of the software features and functionality.
I chose AutoCAD Civil 3D as my company's land surveying software but recognize that it is not 100% wonderful 100% of the time. There is plenty of room for improvement, especially in the area of land surveying functionality, and I'm concerned about Autodesk's lack of commitment to excellence in this area. You should be concerned by this too.
So, I will continue to share the positive aspects of AutoCAD Civil 3D - particularly if it will improve your business and bottom line - but please be aware that the software is lacking in some areas, too. Getting AutoCAD Civil 3D toy work for your needs, or any software package for that matter, is the important thing. And, this is my focus, because you need more than an AutoCAD Civil 3D cheerleader or apologist.
