What is Geomatics Engineering?

OK, now for something completely different!

I love the video, but, Geomatics Engineering? It confuses and concerns me the lengths some will go to unnecessarily “pump up” and embellish on what already exists.

My thoughts:

• Geomatics = Land Surveying
• Geomatics Engineering = Land Surveying
• GIS = Land Surveying
• Land Surveying = Land Surveying

OK, that last one was just for fun, but you get my point. And, the above first three are not true all the time, perhaps.

However, most of the time it is true and is an inconvenient truth for some. Sometimes decisions like this, to name a program “Geomatics Engineering” for example, get made in ignorance and half-knowledge if not entirely by malice.

Where is ACSM & NSPS?

I don’t know the answers, but the questions should be asked. As the years go by, I am increasingly concerned by the state of affairs of our national organizations. With the recent  implosion of ACSM we, as a profession, need to take command of the profession.

Last Word: Regardless of the name, I still think this is an excellent video showing that our industry is important and interesting on many levels.
