Civil 3D Setup and Training

Civil 3D Setup and Training

A large organization asked me this week if I could give them AutoCAD Civil 3D custom template setup and training. They’re looking to use AutoCAD Civil 3D in their workflows. What struck me about their request is they recognized that a successful implementation of AutoCAD Civil 3D is more than simply setting up a template, and that training throughout the template creation process and implementation is important.

Members OnlyThis organization clearly put a lot of thought into their needs and what a successful customized Civil 3D templates project would look like and more impressively, what levels of training they need. Today, in this Premium Post, I want to share with you how this organization is doing AutoCAD Civil 3D custom template setup and training right.

Here is their approach to AutoCAD Civil 3D custom template setup and training done right!

AutoCAD Civil 3D 911: Myth Busting, Proving That You Can Inverse Points In AutoCAD Civil 3D!

This is a response to several online discussions on this topic, and not a question from one person.

I’ve read many web discussions by land surveyors arguing whether AutoCAD Civil 3D is a good surveying tool or not. One example, or myth, that is often stated, is that AutoCAD Civil 3D can’t even inverse between points.

So, is this true? Can you inverse points using AutoCAD Civil 3D? Stay tuned, and I’ll answer that question after the jump.

I had the program’s interface setup the way I like, but one day something went wrong and when I re-opened AutoCAD Civil 3D some of the interface setup was missing. Most items I was able to easily get back in place, like where I put Draw commands, Object snaps, Transparent Commands, etc.

However, I cannot figure out how to get the display of the Layout and Model Tabs back in my drawings. I miss having these tabs and hope you can get them back for me. Help!

Steven, who owns a professional land surveying company struggling with switching over to AutoCAD Civil 3D from AutoCAD Land Desktop, submitted the following Land Surveying 911 question.

Land Surveying 911: Should I Pay For AutoCAD Civil 3D Training Or Try To Learn It On My Own?

Steven says: I own a land surveying company and we are switching from Land Desktop to AutoCAD Civil 3D. We purchased a couple of AutoCAD Civil 3D licenses early last year, and I figured we could migrate to and learn Civil 3D while still using Land Desktop for ongoing work production.

Buying Civil 3D was a hit for my company at the time, but I figured we’d see at least some productivity improvements and by this year, we’d be using Civil 3D fully. I’m embarrassed to say that we are not at all near to meeting our goals. We’ve spent countless hours trying to set up Civil 3D and understand how to work with it on our projects. We’re clearly doing something wrong because we’ve yet to efficiently finish a job from beginning to end.

At every turn, it’s one roadblock or another and we are all very frustrated. Trying to learn how to set up and use Civil 3D on our own has us seriously questioning whether we are doing everything wrong or whether there’s a serious issue with Civil 3D when used by land surveyors?

But then I read about other land surveyors, like yourself, using Civil 3D successfully which makes me question everything we are doing. Eric, what do you recommend; should I pay for AutoCAD Civil 3D training or should I continue to try to learn it on my own?
