Leica Geosystems - when it has to be right

(Norcross, Ga., 10, August 2011) – Leica Geosystems recently announced the start of an unprecedented trade-in program: From now through the end of the year, the company is offering new and existing customers $7,600 for any Dual-Frequency GNSS Receiver or Total Station unit traded in for a new Viva GNSS RTK Rover System.

“We realized how many companies have capital tied up in existing older equipment that can’t be left sitting on the shelf,” said Andrew Hurley, Leica Geosystems’ business manager of surveying and engineering for the NAFTA region. “To help with that capital deployment challenge, Leica Geosystems has designed this trade-in program.”

“We will accept any Dual-Frequency Receiver, and any robotic, motorized or manual Total Station, from any brand,” Hurley said.

Tools I’m Using To Be Productive and Profitable

In the past I’ve written about some of the tools I’m using to keep productive and sane. First, I’d like to say that I’m always willing to try new technologies and techniques, but I’ve become very wary over the years of turning my world around just to suit any particular technology or any software program.

Chasing new software feature or software requirements is perfectly fine, if the new features and/or software are uniquely revolutionary and transformative enough to warrant the investment in change. This is, however, not often the case.

That is why I favor those tools that do their best to work for me and don’t require me to work for it.

Here’s a short list of a few of the tools I’m now using: Read the rest of this entry →

Monitor Movement in Real Time with New Trimble 4D Control Software

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 26, 2010 — Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) introduced today a new version of its Trimble® 4D Control software, the core of Trimble monitoring solutions, that combines Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and optical technologies for real-time deformation monitoring applications. The software is ideal for monitoring dams, bridges, buildings, pipeline support piers, large-scale construction and excavation sites, underground and open pit mines, landslides, tunnels, and other structures.

“With heightened safety concerns about aging infrastructure, deformation monitoring is a growing market,” said Chris Gibson, vice president for Trimble’s Surveying Division. “The new software allows users to leverage the optimal combination of sensor technologies to control, manage and analyze deformation measurements for a wide variety of engineering projects and alert project staff of potentially unsafe conditions requiring action.”

Trimble 4D Control software is a comprehensive solution for both real-time and postprocessed monitoring. The fully scalable and versatile approach of the system makes it easy for surveying organizations to get started in monitoring. By leveraging surveying instruments and tools they already have, Trimble enables surveyors to customize a monitoring solution to meet the needs of even the most demanding applications.

Professional Land Surveyor Survey Party: A Few Land Surveying Pictures From The Field

December 28, 2009 in Associate Membership, Land Surveying, Land Surveying Equipment, Leica, Pictures

This Professional Land Surveyor Survey Party is brought to you by EricColburn.com – Professional Land Surveyor Source – showing a few pictures I snapped while carrying out land surveying field work somewhat recently.

Most of these pictures were taken within the last few weeks, which you might be able to tell by the snow and/or stark cold looking locales, but a couple are from a few months ago when the climate was a little warmer (and greener). Right after the most recent pictures were taken we got hit with that blizzard most of you along the eastern seaboard got hit with too, getting 18-20 inches of snow. The good news is that today, most of that snow is gone!

Professional Land Surveyor Journal March 20, 2009

March 20, 2009 in Associate Membership, Business, General, Land Surveying

Welcome to the first Professional Land Surveyor Journal. In these posts I’ll write about the events, happenings, and trials and tribulations, in my world as a professional land surveyor. Not so much diary as more general discussion.

A New Approach

Recently I’ve been finalizing an over a year long reorganization of my professional land surveying company, Foster Survey Company. In general, I’ve taken a new business approach that incorporates technology, reduced labor costs, lower overhead costs and a better life-balance. It’s not that this transformation wasn’t planned out or relied solely upon happenstance (although it somewhat did), but external forces played a significant role in delaying my plan. To explain, here’s a little background.

A Little History

Sixteen years ago I started Foster Survey Company with my partner, Kurt, and the support of our wives. In Rhode Island the economic climate was similar to today’s, bad. The State was working its way out of a banking crisis, unemployment was at record levels, and the housing industry was in a slump. Not the best timing, but when is it? When you get the entrepreneurial bug you have to jump in feet first.
