To Be A Land Surveyor Or Not To Be A Land Surveyor? That Is The Question

If your daughter, son, niece or nephew are looking at land surveying or geomatics as a career, would you recommend to them land surveying as a career choice?

If you would recommend to them pursuing land surveying as a career, why?

Or, if you wouldn’t recommend land surveying, and hope that they turn, run for the hills, and avoid the land surveying profession at all cost, what’s driving your decision?

Please, leave your comments below so that we can get a better sense of the state of the profession as judged by the profession.

Rate AutoCAD Civil 3D For Downloading Survey Information

I’ve recently had several discussions with both land surveyors and engineers questioning how best to integrate (and what software to do so) land surveying data with AutoCAD Civil 3D?

I’m seeing that with AutoCAD Land Desktop retired, there is a stronger push to get to full AutoCAD Civil 3D implementation within many organizations. And, where the engineering side of these firms are embracing AutoCAD Civil 3D, they are having difficulties integrating the land surveying side of their companies into their AutoCAD Civil 3D workflows.

Much of this land surveying integration “problem” appears to center around the facts that their land surveyors use many software solutions and complain about the “difficulties” and “learning curve” with using AutoCAD Civil 3D for working with survey information – specifically, downloading and uploading survey data.

How do you rate AutoCAD Civil 3D for downloading survey information (leave a comment, too)?

How Many Computer Monitors Do You Use Together?

In the past, I worked with a desktop computer connected to a second computer monitor, which was very handy. Then, when I returned my last desktop computer and second computer monitor to the lessor (I think that’s Greek for the devil), I bought a laptop and soon missed having a second computer monitor when working at my desk.

A few weeks after getting my new laptop, I remembered that I had an older flat screen computer monitor hanging around unused and happy times returned to my desk.

This weekend I was working away from my desk and I realized how useful having a second computer monitor is for certain tasks, like working with AutoCAD Civil 3D. This got me to wondering about how common it is to work with multiple computer monitors….

What Is The Major Challenge Facing Professional Land Surveyors Today?

The land surveying industry faces many challenges, not the least of which are due to the current financial end economic mess. But, is this the major challenge facing Professional Land Surveyors today?

Looking beyond the economic situation, it seems to me that our industry suffers in a leadership morass. If not a leadership morass, then the land surveying industry is at least suffering from a lack of a unifying vision and a lack of a unifying direction. Heck, the land surveying industry can’t even agree to who we are!

Are industry issues like workforce training/competency or public awareness of what land surveyors do the major challenges facing Professional Land Surveyors today?

Finally, with tongue firmly placed in cheek, is Pincushionitis what ails our industry most?

In this Professional Land Surveyor Survey, I’m asking:

Has The Land Surveying Industry Let You Down?

On several online land surveying forums I’ve found posts written by land surveyors discouraged with the state of our land surveying industry. Largely economy driven, or lack thereof, one theme commonly found is a sense of disappointment and being let down by the land surveying industry.

You can attend any surveyors gathering and hear the same laments. And, as noted above, industry workers discontent rises and falls with the economy, however, even in the best of times, you will still hear the same complaints.

Issues often raised, are (in no particular order):

  • Low Pay.
  • No Jobs.
  • Underemployment.
  • Lack of Career Advancement.
  • Dissatisfaction With Managers, Business Owners, and Leadership.
  • Lack of Training.
There certainly is justification for some of these complaints. What’s your opinion?

In this week’s Professional Land Surveyor Survey, I’m asking:

Are You a Geographic Information Surveyor (GIS)?

Too often we micro-define and minimize what it is that we do by defining our profession by what our job tasks are, by what our tools are, by our business processes, or by cultural and historical definitions (some defined by others). Then as times change with new technologies emerging, and we perceive that our profession is under attack, we often react (or not) based upon those misunderstandings.

However, if we step back from the Surveyor / GIS wars and add some perspective, haven’t surveyors been “doing” GIS all along?

First, every society and organization, beginning at the state level and right up to the national level (and beyond), from what I’ve experienced and seen, are well intentioned and have many hard working individuals dedicated to promoting and advancing our land surveying profession. Professional Land Surveyor Survey-Post Great Recession-Are Jobs Going to Come Back?

PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY

PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY

In this week’s PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY I’m asking the question:

Post Great Recession-Are Jobs Going to Come Back?

I’ve been thinking lately about what the jobs situation in the land surveying industry will look like as as a full recovery takes hold and the Great Recession, hopefully, comes to an end. Lately I’ve heard several experts talk about jobs and the economy discussing how this will not only be a jobless recovery, but that in certain fields some jobs will never come back. In many respects, I believe this will be true for professional land surveyors and all land surveying technicians.

The times They Have A Changed!

Regardless of the current economic conditions and times, although significant, if you look at the history of land surveying there is one very important truism: As technology has increased the number of surveyors to complete the work has decreased. If you’ve been surveying for any amount of time, think back to how many people worked on your field crew and how many people it took in the office to get that work done. If you go way back, was it four or more people on your field crew and nearly an equal amount in the office? If you go back to when I started in the mid 1980′s, there where three field crew members and at least two to three surveyors or drafters working in the office (this doesn’t include clerical workers).

However, shortly after I started surveying the Total Station with built-in EDM became commonly used, and the field crews were reduced to two people. Over time, the office became the same way, in that personnel was reduced as software like AutoCAD was adopted. Where it was common to have an office survey technician do basic reductions and control plotting, a drafter plotted field notes and prepared plans, and a professional land surveyor calculated boundaries and provided professional oversight, it didn’t take long after automated drafting and surveying software took hold that the work it formerly took many people to complete could now be completed by one person. And now, with Robotic Total Stations and GPS, it’s becoming more commonplace to only have only one person working in the field.

But here’s the rub: Before the Great Recession hit, many professional land surveyors had not moved to use systems, both in the office and in the field, to increase productivity and reduce the total amount of employees required to complete their surveys. Since then, how the times they have a changed! With a lack of work and with no cash flow, many firms have been forced to cut to the bone and work with skeleton crews. Some, like myself, had invested in “Solo-Surveyor” equipment like Robotic Total Stations and GPS, so they could work with as little as one person (if there was work at all).

What is Your Favorite Social Networking Site?

In the last two or more years I’ve seen more and more professional land surveyors, engineers, AutoCAD users, and designers using social networking sites like Facebook, Land Surveyors United, Linkedin, MySpace, Twitter, and Tumblr. These are just a few of the more popular social networking sites on the interwebs nowadays. Social networking is here to stay, so join the revolution or get left behind!

If you haven’t already done so, then you’re missing out on an opportunity to improve your business, brand, “awareness”, and build relationships with your customers (existing and new). In this week’s PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY I’m asking the question:

Bootstrap or Training, How Did You Implement AutoCAD Civil 3D?

I originally posted this question on Linkedin as follows:

Bootstrap or training, how did you implement AutoCAD Civil 3D?

I was wondering how C3D users implemented C3D. Did you “bootstrap” it by trying to implement and learn C3D on your own or did you take more formal training and classes? Or, did you have a consultant setup C3D and train you at your site?”

With that said, I guess I also wonder which approach is best? Any thoughts?”

There, it turned into a fairly lively discussion, so I thought I’d pose the same question here. One idea that kept coming up in the conversation was of needing an AutoCAD Civil 3D “Power User”, which I do think is important. This must be yourself, if your a one-person shop, or some one person within a larger work group or organization.

PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY

In this week’s PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY I’m asking the question:

Are You Passionate About Your Profession?

Even in the best of times you can lose a little passion for your profession. It happens to the best of us. I’m very passionate about my profession, land surveying, and have been for nearly 26 years now. That doesn’t mean, however, that my love of surveying hasn’t ebbed and flowed over the years.

As a matter of fact, the only time I outright disliked surveying was for about the first week or two when I started land surveying. At that time I enjoyed working with the field crew I was on, my Crew Chief, Bill, made the work interesting, always passed along knowledge to me, and he treated the work as serious and professional. Unfortunately, I was disinterested and simply passing time.

Then, sometime in the second or third week, I mastered a few of the basics and started to pay attention to what Bill and our transit man (I only use “transit man” here because he was a he) were doing, and something clicked. What I started to see was the skill they employed and how much love and passion they had for land surveying. I guess it stuck and I haven’t looked back since.
