Leica GR25 WLAN-enabled GNSS Reference Server

With the WLAN module with and other advanced communication interfaces, the integrated modular devices management, multi-user management and high-end security the GR25 Reference Server offers the most flexible internet connection sharing available.

(Heerbrugg, Switzerland,  8 May 2013) - The Leica GR25 GNSS Reference Server has now been enhanced with a standard on-board WLAN module to extend its Ethernet and mobile wireless internet connectivity options.  This is accompanied by the new RefWorx on-board firmware v3.00, adding unique internet connection sharing allowing other computers or network devices connected to Ethernet or WLAN to directly access the Internet through the GR10 or GR25 server’s new routing capability. The new flexible Site Monitor positioning modes and many other improvements are also included. These new capabilities together with other advanced communication interfaces, the integrated modular devices management, multi-user management and high end security means that currently only the GR25 provides a true GNSS Reference Server functionality.

MAPPS Commends Reintroduction of “Map it Once, Use it Many Times” Act in Congress

May 2, 2013 in Business, Geomatics, GNSS, GPS, Land Surveying, News, Professional Land Surveyor Practice

NEWS

MAPPS (www.mapps.org), the national association for private sector geospatial firms, today commended Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO) for reintroducing H.R. 1604, the “Map It Once, Use It Many Times” Act on April 17.

H.R. 1604 is intended to reform, consolidate, and reorganize federal geospatial activities. Recently, a number of Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports have identified duplicative and a lack of coordination in federal geospatial activities. This bill provides a priority-setting mechanism to enhance the use of geospatial data, products, technology, and services for federal agencies, Congress and non-federal stakeholders.

“This legislation will save money, make government more efficient, and eliminate not only government agency duplication of one another, but government duplication of and competition with private enterprise. Use of the private sector for geospatial data, technology and services is important to national economic growth and job creation, and is of particular interest to Colorado given the significant concentration of firms doing this work in our state,” said Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05).

GEOID12 Error Analysis Complete and GEOID12A Model Developed

GEOID12 Error Map

GEOID12 Error Map

Here’s an important notice from The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) concerning the new GEOID12 model:

The National Geodetic Survey has determined that the GEOID12 model was developed using erroneous input control points, primarily in the Gulf Coast region. NGS immediately corrected these errors and developed a replacement model: GEOID12A. GEOID12A is now available for public analysis and comment on the NGS Beta website for GEOID12A and will soon be released for production.

Localized errors were found in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Canada. Errors in Enid, Oklahoma, and Canada were identified shortly after the August 8, 2012 error notice was posted. After receiving critical input from surveyors, the control data used to develop GEOID12 were immediately re-evaluated, and problematic control stations were identified. Once the problem control stations were corrected, a new model, GEOID12A, was developed. The differences between GEOID12A and GEOID12 are displayed in the map, below. (Click on the map to open a full-size PDF version.) The map shows all areas where GEOID12A differs from GEOID12; in all other areas, the two models are identical (except for the localized errors in Canada).

NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS)

The National Geodetic Survey Improves the National Spatial Reference System with Simultaneous Major Product Releases

In the first week of July, NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS) released the results of three major improvements to the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). The NSRS is the consistent coordinate system that defines latitude, longitude, height, scale, gravity, and orientation throughout the United States and its territories. NGS maintains and provides access to the NSRS, which is the foundation for the nation’s transportation, mapping, and charting infrastructure and serves a multitude of scientific and engineering applications.

The three improvements to the NSRS are:

  • A new realization of the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83);
  • New gravimetric and hybrid geoid models; and
  • The determination of updated elevations in the Gulf Coast Height Modernization Project.

Leica Geosystems announces Leica RCD30 multi-head camera concept

(Heerbrugg, 6 June 2012) - Leica Geosystems, the world’s leading manufacturer of airborne mapping solutions, announced today that it is expanding the very popular Leica RCD30 series of medium format cameras by adding dual-head and penta-head solutions to the portfolio.

The Leica RCD30 combines unique design features such as bi-directional motion compensation and beamsplitter technology. The Leica RCD30 is the only medium-format camera to generate highly accurate, co-registered multispectral imagery from one camera head for photogrammetric and remote sensing mapping applications.

“We are very pleased with the market acceptance of this revolutionary imaging technology. Our rapidly growing customer base worldwide indicates that this innovative technology exceeds their expectations in image quality, accuracy and productivity,” says Ruedi Wagner, Vice President Imaging at Hexagon Geosystems’ Geospatial Solutions Division. “Once again we have listened to the market and will now expand on the success of the Leica RCD30 design with dual-head and penta-head configurations. We are confident that the industry-first design of a camera head capable of acquiring multispectral data in RGB and NIR combined with four camera heads acquiring RGB data will be of particular interest to such high-growth markets as 3D city and urban mapping.”
