National web mapping for the higher and further education sector

Inspiring learning – Cadcorp software enables greater sharing of map data to UK education sector

Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp and the EDINA National Data Centre have announced that the latest version of the EDINA Digimap service has gone live.

Launched in 2000, the EDINA Digimap service specialises in the delivery of a number of geographical data resources over the internet to over 150 academic institutions.  National digital map data ranging from Ordnance Survey® (OS) products to geology, marine and historical maps can be accessed by staff and students free at point of use. Based on Cadcorp’s web mapping software GeognoSIS, the service also utilises a number of licences of Map Modeller, Cadcorp’s high-end desktop GIS system.

MAPPS Seeks Legislation in Congress to Authorize “Imagery for the Nation” “Making America Prosperous (MAP) Act” Would Create National Geospatial Image Maps

A bill to authorize the program known within the geospatial community as “Imagery for the Nation” is being presented for introduction in Congress, MAPPS announced today.

“‘Map it once, use it many times’ is not only a mantra in the geospatial community, but it is technologically feasible through the use of satellite and aerial imagery and geographic information systems. To save tax dollars, create private sector jobs, and provide baseline geographic data for economic development and a variety of other applications beneficial to government programs and private business and investment, MAPPS is urging Congress to authorize and fund a program of geospatial image maps of the United States through a bill known as the Making America Prosperous Act, or MAP Act,” said Jeff Lovin, PS,CP, (Woolpert, Inc, Dayton, OH) MAPPS President.

Professional Land Surveyor News: The Schneider Corporation Taps Michael Miller for Director of Land Surveying at Charlotte Office

INDIANAPOLIS and CHARLOTTE, N.C. – (November 17, 2009) – The Schneider Corporation (http://www.schneidercorp.com), providers of creative engineering solutions for land, infrastructure and facilities projects that help increase revenue, lower costs and mitigate risk, announced that Michael S. Miller has joined its Charlotte, N.C. office as director of land surveying. Schneider’s Charlotte office services more than 170 clients in North Carolina and the mid-east region, including Carmel Contractors, City of Charlotte, Crosland, DR Horton Homes, Duke Energy and Shiel Sexton. Schneider’s work in the Charlotte office focuses on environmental, energy and infrastructure projects.

Miller is an experienced land surveyor. He has been involved in many well-known projects throughout the region, including site work construction staking for Concord Mills Mall, design survey for multiple projects at University of North Carolina-Charlotte, and design survey and construction survey for Piedmont Town Center and associated road improvements.

“Mike’s projects speak for themselves. He is a respected professional and will make a great addition to our Charlotte office,” said Scott Lawson, vice president of survey at The Schneider Corporation.

Miller joined Schneider from ESP Associates, Fort Mill, S.C., where he managed a staff of survey crews and technicians. As the department manager, he also was responsible for proposal generation, invoicing and managing project reports. He also spent several years as a professional land surveyor at Lucas Forman, Charlotte, N.C.

Miller serves as the vice president of the Mecklenburg Surveyors Association. He earned his bachelor’s degree in commercial design from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
