Leica Geosystems ScanStation C5 Scanner

The ScanStation C5 comes standard as a high-performance, cost-effective scanner that works well for entry-level teams.

Regional leader DMK Associates Inc. chooses a Leica Geosystems ScanStation C5 scanner to equip Southwest Florida’s first permanently-based laser scanning crew.

(Norcross, Ga./Heerbrugg, 2 July 2012) – DMK Associates, Inc., a 28-person full-service consulting firm serving counties and municipalities in Southwest Florida, recently established the region’s first dedicated laser scanning crew and chose the Leica ScanStation C5 laser scanner for daily operations. “The ScanStation C5 was a good fit for us,” said DMK President and CEO Karl Kokomoor, PE, “It’s a great value as is, we’re very comfortable with Leica Geosystems’ rugged equipment, and the ScanStation C5 can be upgraded when we need more capacity—it was the best choice for us and is really working out well.”

Kokomoor says that the local offices of some national consulting firms have been using laser scanners for a few years. “But we’re the first to establish a field crew and full office capacity to process point clouds into the models and data that our clients need. Cities and other clients are beginning to ask for scanned data, and it was important to us to stay ahead of the market.”

The following news story is a very interesting article I found about Professional Land Surveyors participating in an Auburn University-sponsored workshop, “Locating the Ellicott Mounds Along the Alabama/ Florida Boundary”:

Andalusia starting point for ‘mound hunt’

Professional surveyors look for centuries-old markers of Alabama-Florida line

By Justin Schuver (Contact) | Andalusia Star-News

Published Friday, December 4, 2009

More than 35 professional surveyors and engineers are visiting Andalusia this week to take part in a “hidden treasure” hunt. But in this case, their treasure is literally nothing more than piles of dirt.

The professionals are participating in the Auburn University-sponsored workshop, “Locating the Ellicott Mounds Along the Alabama/ Florida Boundary.” The Ellicott mounds were established in 1799 by Andrew Ellicott and a team of both Spanish and American surveyors, and were used to mark the 31st parallel and show the boundary between Alabama and Spanish-owned Florida.

Poll Shows 81% of Voters Hold Favorable Impression of Land Preservation, 67% Support Continued Funding

Support includes all age groups, political parties, and regions of the state

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — April 6, 2009 — The vast majority of Florida voters support funding for Florida Forever at current levels, even in the current economic climate, according to a new statewide survey. The poll — released publicly today, “Florida Forever Day” at the State Capitol — was conducted by the national survey firm of Public Opinion Strategies for The Nature Conservancy, Trust for Public Land, and the Florida Forever Coalition.

When voters are told about Florida Forever, they are overwhelmingly positive toward the program. Respondents were told that “Florida Forever was created in 1999 by Governor Jeb Bush and the state legislature, and is funded through fees on real estate transactions. Florida Forever has preserved over six hundred thousand acres of land for water resources, natural areas, wildlife habitat, and parks.” Fully 81 percent indicated they have a positive impression of Florida Forever, with 44 percent having a very favorable impression of it. A mere 13 percent had an unfavorable impression.

Two-thirds of voters come down on the side of maintaining funding for Florida Forever. Read the rest of this entry →
