LightSquared Video to Debunk Several GPS Interference Myths-Facts or Propaganda?

GPS Constellation

GPS Constellation

Yesterday, I published a press release by House Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Tom Petri Rebuts LightSquared Ad in Letter to CEO and another press release where the Defense Department Seeks to Protect GPS Operations Against LightSquared Network.

In summary, Congressman Petri, House Aviation Subcommittee Chairman, disputes the LightSquared arguments that the GPS manufacturers are on the wrong side of this interference issue, and Air Force Gen. William L. Shelton, Commander of Air Force Space Command, told members of the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Strategic Forces yesterday that LightSquared’s new terrestrial network has the potential to wreak havoc on GPS systems that are vital to the military.

While doing some followup reading on this subject, I came across a YouTube video produced by LightSquared entitled “Find Out Who is Trying to Block Wireless Innovation in America.”

Facts or LightSquared Propaganda

So, does the LightSquared “Find Out Who is Trying to Block Wireless Innovation in America” video actually debunk several GPS interference myths? Are the statements made facts or are they LightSquared propaganda?

I do not know which side is right or wrong, but clearly one side is wrong, as both make opposing arguments making it crystal clear that only one side is making correct assertions. I’ve provided the video out of fairness to both sides and so that you can make your own decision on this controversial issue.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16, 2011 – Defense Department officials are raising concerns that a company’s proposed wireless broadband network would cause harmful interference to essential Global Positioning System operations.

LightSquared’s new terrestrial network has the potential to wreak havoc on GPS systems that are vital to the military and used in a host of applications, Teresa Takai, the DOD’s chief information officer, and Air Force Gen. William L. Shelton, commander of Air Force Space Command, told members of the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Strategic Forces yesterday.

“GPS is vital to national security and is relied upon by our servicemen and women for a wide array of capabilities,” Takai said in written testimony.

House Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Tom Petri Rebuts LightSquared Ad in Letter to CEO

In a letter to the chairman and CEO of a controversial wireless company, House Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Tom Petri (R-WI) sought to set the record straight Thursday following the company’s ad in the Wall Street Journal the day before.

LightSquared, a wireless broadband company, has been mired in controversy because it plans to use a portion of the radio spectrum adjacent to that used by global positioning system (GPS) satellites and the GPS equipment used in cars, planes, military equipment and elsewhere to help users navigate trips or identify the location of GPS-enabled equipment.  A fully functioning GPS system is critical to ongoing efforts to modernize the nation’s air traffic control system.
