Professional Land Surveyor News: GeoEye Receives U.S. Government Contract Award for New Web Mapping Service

GeoEye, Inc., announced this week that it has signed a modification to a contract with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to provide Web mapping services under the NGA’s Rapid Delivery of Online GEOINT (RDOG) program. This contract modification was made so that GeoEye can provide for Rapid Delivery of High-Resolution Commercial Satellite Imagery to Department of Defense Users.

GeoEye reports that this Web hosting and dissemination contract modification is in addition to ongoing production work being done under the RDOG contract originally awarded in June 2009 and under GeoEye’s Service Level Agreement with the NGA.

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 Upgrade is Ready for Download!

This morning I was quite happy to see an email in my inbox from Autodesk telling me that my AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 upgrade is available for me to download! One of the benefits of being an Autodesk Subscription Customer is being able to download your upgrades as soon as they become available.

While Autodesk touts this as an environmental initiative, which of course it is, and you can still select to receive yet another box and DVD to add to your already mountainous collection of Autodesk boxed software, I think employing a digital download delivery system may have more to do with a certain court case Autodesk is involved with with one of its users who has tried to sell an older version of his software on eBay than environmental altruism. Color me cynical.

Professional Land Surveyor News: The Schneider Corporation Taps Michael Miller for Director of Land Surveying at Charlotte Office

INDIANAPOLIS and CHARLOTTE, N.C. – (November 17, 2009) – The Schneider Corporation (http://www.schneidercorp.com), providers of creative engineering solutions for land, infrastructure and facilities projects that help increase revenue, lower costs and mitigate risk, announced that Michael S. Miller has joined its Charlotte, N.C. office as director of land surveying. Schneider’s Charlotte office services more than 170 clients in North Carolina and the mid-east region, including Carmel Contractors, City of Charlotte, Crosland, DR Horton Homes, Duke Energy and Shiel Sexton. Schneider’s work in the Charlotte office focuses on environmental, energy and infrastructure projects.

Miller is an experienced land surveyor. He has been involved in many well-known projects throughout the region, including site work construction staking for Concord Mills Mall, design survey for multiple projects at University of North Carolina-Charlotte, and design survey and construction survey for Piedmont Town Center and associated road improvements.

Miller joined Schneider from ESP Associates, Fort Mill, S.C., where he managed a staff of survey crews and technicians. As the department manager, he also was responsible for proposal generation, invoicing and managing project reports. He also spent several years as a professional land surveyor at Lucas Forman, Charlotte, N.C.

Miller serves as the vice president of the Mecklenburg Surveyors Association. He earned his bachelor’s degree in commercial design from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.

Decline in Commercial Real Estate Sectors Appears to be Slowing

Washington, August 19, 2009

Commercial real estate activity has suffered from a severe credit crunch for commercial sectors, sustained job losses and weak consumer spending, although the decline appears to be slowing.  A forward-looking indicator shows commercial real estate will remain weak into 2010, but recent actions by the Federal Reserve should improve some flow of capital into commercial lending, according to the National Association of Realtors®.
