EricColburn.com, the Professional Land Surveyor Source, Turns 4!

Time flies when you’re having fun –  it suddenly dawned on me that I’ve blogged for four years now! It hardly seems possible, but four years ago this month I created EricColburn.com.

In the early days of this site I had a limited, for sure. Since then, however, I am daily humbled by the connections I make from around the globe. It turns out that land surveyors are much the same, everywhere.

From the beginning, I had a vision of what I wanted to do. Since then my focus has sharpened a bit. My original goals were to grow a community dedicated to land surveyors, to share land surveying news and updates, and to share some of the land surveying knowledge I’ve collected over the years.

Mission accomplished!

I was speaking with a fellow professional land surveyor about a property survey he is conducting for land next to a property I recently surveyed, when he said, “Later, I’ve got to ask you what is your secret?”

Are you struggling to build a successful web presence for your professional land surveying business?

The “secret” he wanted to know, was how I’ve developed such a large web presence. What he really wanted to know is my “secret” for getting such successful search results for my land surveying business and personal brand. At first, I was a little taken aback, as I really didn’t want to divulge any “trade secrets” (such as they are) but in reality, there are four basic ingredients a Successful Professional Land Surveyor Business Web Presence.

In this Professional Land Surveyor Premium Post (signup here) I’ll share my “secret” 4 Ingredients for a Successful Professional Land Surveyor Business Web Presence.

5 Tips For Marketing Your Land Surveying Company Using Videos

September 4, 2010 in Associate Membership, Business, Business Videos, Continuing Education, Land Surveying, Land Surveying Videos, Marketing, Premium Membership, Professional Land Surveyor Practice, Videos

YouTubeIn this Premium Membership post we’ll discuss, as the title says, 5 Tips For Marketing Your Land Surveying Company Using Videos. I think that using videos is a fantastic way for you to connect with your existing customers. At the same time you’ll be throwing open the doors for new customers to easily learn about whom you are, your message and how to do business with you.

First, I’ve collected a few YouTube videos I found with land surveyors marketing their services. I’ve tried to find a variety of approaches others have used to give you some ideas and inspiration. I’m using YouTube videos as examples, but there are certainly other video sharing services and sites, including you self-hosting your own content, which we’ll discuss in another Premium Membership posts.

EricColburn.com The Professional Land Surveyor Source Turns Two!

EricColburn.com The Professional Land Surveyor Source Turns Two!

EricColburn.com The Professional Land Surveyor Source Turns Two!

Yesterday, it just occurred to me that this site, EricColburn.com the Professional Land Surveyor Source, has turned two. Well, it actually happened on last Saturday, and I really didn’t start writing regularly here until the first week of July, 2008, but you get my point. So I wanted to take a moment to recognize this anniversary, share with you what creating this website and writing this blog has meant to me, give you some shameless plugs and self-serving factoids, and talk about where I’d like to go from here.

The Terrible Two’s

I’ve said it before, but here’s a little back-story. Several years ago I’d read a story written by Walt Mossberg, the principal technology columnist for The Wall Street Journal, about blogging and it intrigued me. Because of the blinding lights of the boom-years and stupidly getting caught up in the rat race, I put off doing what I really wanted to do. Finally, in May of 2008, as the economy wound down, I made adjustments to the way I did business, happily got caught up on work, life became more manageable and I took the time to setup this blog!

It was slow to start, taking the time to find the right look and feel for my blog, but eventually everything clicked and over the last two years I’ve published 546 posts, not counting this one. On average, that’s about one post for every workday, which was a goal of mine. I’ve really enjoyed the writing and creating multi-media content, too, like my AutoCAD Civil 3D videos and the Professional Land Surveyor Podcast (more coming soon).

AutoCAD Civil 3D Surveying Quick Tips and Tricks: Add Ribbon Menu Items To The Quick Access Toolbar

Quick Access Toolbar

Quick Access Toolbar

In today’s AutoCAD Civil 3D Surveying Quick Tips and Tricks I’m going to show you how to Add Ribbon Menu Items To The Quick Access Toolbar.

This technique is very useful when you want to have easy access to a favorite AutoCAD Civil 3D menu item but don’t want the hassle of switching Ribbon Panels (particularly if you use that menu item often but don’t use or have its Ribbon Panel open for much else).

I must have discovered before how to Add Ribbon Menu Items To The Quick Access Toolbar and forgot about it, because I apparently did this to place Copy With Base Point on my Quick Access Toolbar sometime in the past. However, I “rediscovered” how to do this recently from another CAD blog. Unfortunately I don’t remember which one. I thought I had bookmarked the site, or added it to my Twitter Favorites, but when I started to put this Quick Tips and Tricks post together I couldn’t find or remember the source.

So, if it was you who recently blogged about the Add Ribbon Menu Items To The Quick Access Toolbar, where I got the inspiration for this post, please let us know in the comments or contact me so I can give you the credit you deserve!

Now on to the AutoCAD Civil 3D Surveying Quick Tips and Tricks to Add Ribbon Menu Items To The Quick Access Toolbar: Read the rest of this entry →

Professional Website Package for Professional Land Surveyors

August 7, 2009 in Associate Membership, Business, General, Land Surveying, News

World Wide Web

World Wide Web

In the past years it has become more commonplace for surveying companies to have their own website. What has surprised me, though, is how many land surveyors I come across that still don’t have a website (or one that’s rather clunky) and don’t have email addresses that match their company brand.

There’s no reason to have an email address like “RomeoDanceStud[at]aol.com”, or worse, which doesn’t match your company name/brand and may reveal personal information which is both unwanted and unprofessional, too!

I know from experience that getting the complete package including great website hosting, a powerful website,  a unique branded domain name, and matching branded email addresses, at an affordable price, can be a challenge.

But this is what I do, so I want to help land surveyors like yourself succeed in this important area.

Having a branded domain name, website and email addresses will improve your business by looking more professional to your existing and new clients. Improving your company’s search results and connecting with your clients with tools like a blog will also help your business to grow.

Introducing my Professional Website Package for Professional Land Surveyors (or anyone else)!

Please note that the price is introductory only for the Month of August!
