Professional Land Surveyor Survey-Should NSPS Separate from ACSM?

In this week’s Professional Land Surveyor Survey, I’m asking the question:

Should NSPS Separate from ACSM?

Recently, the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) announced that it is seeking to separate from the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM). In a joint NSPS letter by Wayne HarrisonNSPS President, John MatonichNSPS Immediate Past President, and Curt SumnerNSPS Executive Director, entitled “The Evolution of a National Voice, The Future of the National Society of Professional Surveyors“, the three layout the timeline set in place (2 years) and the reasons for this potential departure. You can read their letter here »» The Evolution of a National Voice, The Future of the National Society of Professional Surveyors.

On the flip side of this brewing controversy, if you visit the ACSM website you will find under Developing News, the following:

NSPS to re-define its relationship to ACSM

ACSM then provides the following three informational links:

  • Motion by the NSPS Board of Directors
  • Letter from NSPS leadership
  • Report by Scott Oser Associates: ACSM Marketing Outreach Strategy

The ACSM website goes on to ask you:

“To help clarify any confusion that may exist regarding the activities currently being pursued, and the reasoning behind them, please pay special attention to the wording in the NSPS Board of Directors’ motion. Note that the motion specifically recognizes the necessity for gauging the impact of, and obtaining input from constituents, in determining what (if any) action should be taken.”

Read, learn and think; I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more about this in the next two years.
