PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY-Are You Passionate About Your Profession?

PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY

In this week’s PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR SURVEY I’m asking the question:

Are You Passionate About Your Profession?

Even in the best of times you can lose a little passion for your profession. It happens to the best of us. I’m very passionate about my profession, land surveying, and have been for nearly 26 years now. That doesn’t mean, however, that my love of surveying hasn’t ebbed and flowed over the years.

As a matter of fact, the only time I outright disliked surveying was for about the first week or two when I started land surveying. At that time I enjoyed working with the field crew I was on, my Crew Chief, Bill, made the work interesting, always passed along knowledge to me, and he treated the work as serious and professional. Unfortunately, I was disinterested and simply passing time.

Then, sometime in the second or third week, I mastered a few of the basics and started to pay attention to what Bill and our transit man (I only use “transit man” here because he was a he) were doing, and something clicked. What I started to see was the skill they employed and how much love and passion they had for land surveying. I guess it stuck and I haven’t looked back since.

Land surveying is what I love to do and I am passionate about!

There have been a few times along the way, though, that I loved it a little less. Bad economies, difficult working conditions, demanding clients, too little work, too much work - these are a few examples of things that can douse the passion.

But hey, if you don’t dwell on the negative and instead focus on the positive, eventually you’ll forget about the bad times and instead enjoy basking in the golden sunshine of the good times. OK, that may be a little overboard, but you get the idea.

Bottom line: If you enjoy the work you are doing and are passionate about your profession it hardly feels like work. And, that’s pretty awesome!

So take this week’s survey and please leave your comments telling us what makes you passionate (or not) about your profession. And, if you used to be passionate about your profession and have since lost your way, tell us what might help you to rediscover your passion.

PS: Passion is only ignited from the spark within you. If you have no passion for your profession then I offer these two solutions. 1, soul search and find a profession that you can be passionate about. 2, soul search and identify those aspects of your profession that you are really good at and that you enjoy doing, then concentrate on those areas.
