MAYSVILLE, Ky., U.S.A. (September 30, 2010) — Carlson Software, a leading producer of software for land development professionals in the surveying, civil engineering, construction and mining industries, has released its 2011 office software.

Hundreds of improvements to speed and ease design work and increase accuracy have been put into Carlson’s diverse product line, which includes Carlson Survey, Carlson Civil, Carlson Hydrology, Carlson GIS, Carlson Point Cloud, Carlson Geology, Carlson Surface/Underground Mining, Carlson Construction and Carlson Takeoff.

The software offers choice of CAD platform of AutoCAD® and IntelliCAD®. Any AutoCAD or Map® version 2000 through 2011 for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions can be used. IntelliCAD 6.6, a .dwg file compatible CAD platform, comes built-in and ready to use for no extra cost. A beta version of IntelliCAD 7.0 is also included as a preview of the upcoming major new release.

Top new capabilities of Carlson Civil 2011 include Road Rehabilitation commands that were developed specifically to save time and money for those working on the many resurfacing projects currently under way around the country. The commands create designs for specified overlay with milling or leveling.

Other Carlson Civil 2011 enhancements include:

  • command for Vehicle Path Tracking, which allows designers to trace wheel paths for vehicle dimensions along centerline;
  • the ability to Edit Contours and instantly update the underlying 3D model (updates the underlying TIN surface to match the modified contours), a feature that is unique to Carlson;
  • addition of graphic previews of settings within dialog of Draw Profile that includes retention of custom edits of labels;
  • added setting for curve definitions, which includes either roadway or railroad curves; and
  • a new Draw Plan View Sheets command to create layouts of plan views.

Here’s a quick preview of some of the top new aspects of the other Carlson 2011 modules:

Carlson Survey. Added method to create GIS data links and label selected attributes using Field-to-Finish. New Best-Fit Centerline to create a least-squares best-fit horizontal alignment with curves and tangents from points.

Carlson Hydrology. Redesigned and enhanced sewer spreadsheet editor for working in profile view. Added support in sewer network for multiple pipes between structures and for separate inlet locations.

Carlson GIS. New import and export GIS routines for working with SurvCE complete the data loop between field and office. Added support for using Esri Map Standards for CAD to all the GIS data commands, which allows for viewing and editing GIS data in an Esri format. Plus, new ability to create Esri data for sewer networks, lot files, mining timing and surface mine reserves that enables taking this data from Carlson to Esri.

Carlson Takeoff. Now allows use of any combination of 2D to 3D commands to elevate from different sources including labels, spot elevations and contours. Increased automation for importing PDFs now available. And, opportunity to produce customizable trenching reports with all the details.

Carlson Point Cloud. Ability to filter out data points above the ground, i.e. bare earth surface extraction. Plus, feature recognition for curbs, breaklines, trees and poles.

Carlson Geology. New auto-run method to process multiple benches for surface mine reserves.

Carlson Mining. Improved Design Bench Pit with new offset method that provides better handling of interior corners. Plus, method added to assign benches by elevation in addition to depth or surface model and ability to name the benches for reporting.
