New version of Topcon ScanMaster software improves scanning performance

LIVERMORE, Calif. – Thursday, October 27, 2011

Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) has released a new version of software used with Topcon’s GLS series of laser scanners – ScanMaster v2.5. The new version was designed to improve existing features, add new functions, and broaden applications for scanning.

“We’ve expanded the application capabilities that the software provides,” said Brad Burgess, TPS national sales manager for scanning products. “With this release, ScanMaster further enables our customers to extract and deliver value-rich point cloud data to their clients in support of BIM (Building Information Modeling) project workflows.”

Many functions are now automated, such as region extraction and edge extraction.  Edge sets now automatically retain and recall settings and differentiate edge boundaries and intersections.  “Added automated features simplify and speed up scanning work for the operator,” Burgess said.

Other features, such as scan position re-sectioning, were added to give the user greater flexibility.

Data can now be colored by normal and by region modes and associated settings.  Surface normal vectors can be calculated with storage for scans and clouds. “Scanner operators will see improved performance of the coloring function,” said Burgess.

“The list of improvements with version 2.5 is impressive and were developed so operators can quickly acquire, manipulate and deliver desired data from mass 3D point clouds and images,” Burgess said.

Improvements and features include data coloring, spatial indexing, visualization, resampling, surface vectors, primitives, annotations, automated region extractions, automated edge extractions, volume meshes and interoperability.

Topcon’s newest scanner, the GLS-1500, captures 30,000 points per second at a range of 500 ft. (150m) to a typical surface, and with an extended range to 1100 ft. (330m) for more reflective surfaces.  Burgess said, “We have an excellent product in the GLS-1500 scanner, and the new ScanMaster software will improve performance beyond compare.”
