EricColburn.com, the Professional Land Surveyor Source, Turns 4!

Time flies when you’re having fun –  it suddenly dawned on me that I’ve blogged for four years now! It hardly seems possible, but four years ago this month I created EricColburn.com.

In the early days of this site I had a limited, for sure. Since then, however, I am daily humbled by the connections I make from around the globe. It turns out that land surveyors are much the same, everywhere.

From the beginning, I had a vision of what I wanted to do. Since then my focus has sharpened a bit. My original goals were to grow a community dedicated to land surveyors, to share land surveying news and updates, and to share some of the land surveying knowledge I’ve collected over the years.

Mission accomplished!

Real-Time, Precise Data Will Serve Professionals in the Redlands Community

Esri GPS Base Station GISA

The Esri GPS base station, GISA, is mounted to a building in Redlands, California.

Redlands, California—Esri recently installed a GPS base station to assist its GIS developers and to support surveyors, engineers, scientists, and those in public works and public safety in the community surrounding the Esri campus in Redlands, California. The base station, named GISA, has been accepted by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and incorporated into the national Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network.

“GPS, originally designed as a US Department of Defense system, has become part of everyday life, with the technology in all types of devices from smartphones to shipping containers,” said Brent Jones, Esri surveying and engineering industry manager. “The Esri GPS base station is a great benefit to the community, as professionals can use it in surveying and positioning to achieve accurate locations in real time.”

Leica CS25 LRBT

The Leica CS25 LRBT offers the possibility to wirelessly connect to a remote device, such as Leica Geosystems Total Station, over a distance of 350 m.

(Heerbrugg, 3 May 2012) - Leica Geosystems is pleased to announce the Leica CS25 LRBT, the new model of its successful Leica CS25 rugged tablet computer. The Leica CS25 LRBT offers the possibility to wirelessly connect to a remote device, such as a Leica Geosystems Total Station.

The fully integrated data transfer via a Long Range Bluetooth® Wireless Technology is one of the absolute highlights of the  new Leica CS25 rugged tablet computer. The wireless connectivity to a remote sensor such as a Total Station equipped with the RH16 Long Range Bluetooth Radio handle was requested by many Leica Zeno GIS users. Now it is possible to perform an object-oriented survey in one-man operation, together with e.g. Leica MobileMatriX, without the need for external separate wireless radios, over a distance of up to 350 m (1150 ft).

AutoCAD Civil 3D Guts Google Earth!

AutoCAD Civil 3D Guts Google Earth!

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise … Autodesk Guts Google Earth From AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013

In working with the newly released AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013, it surprised me to find out that Autodesk gutted Google Earth functionality from this latest C3D version. After not finding the formerly available Google Earth commands in the Import Panel on the Ribbon Insert Tab, I searched on Google for an explanation (ironic, isn’t it?).

What I found was the following Autodesk forum post by an AutoCAD Civil 3D Senior Product Manager:

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 Guts Google Earth

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 Guts Google Earth

While I’m not thrilled by getting an explanation that Google Earth utilities are not included in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013, and I’m happy to know that Autodesk will post any potential announcements (if any) on “various channels including Autodesk Labs, Facebook, Blogs and the Civil 3D Discussion Group”, it’s not as effective and open as an explanation clearly posted on the Autodesk, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 Product Page!
