RESTON, Va. - October 13, 2011 – LightSquared, a wholesale carrier building a nationwide wireless broadband network that will create consumer choice and drive industry innovation, has collaborated with several high-tech companies to develop solutions to the GPS interference issue.

Despite claims by GPS device manufacturers that a solution would take ten years and billions of dollars to develop, viable and inexpensive solutions have entered into the marketplace within a matter of weeks. In fact, once LightSquared challenged the high-tech community to find a fix, several innovative companies rose to the occasion.

“So far at least three companies have come forward with a solution and we expect that more will step forward,” said Martin Harriman, executive vice president of ecosystem development and satellite business for LightSquared. “A majority of precision devices can be fixed by replacing the external antenna, others will require a factory retrofit, but in every case LightSquared has an affordable and efficient fix.”

The first GPS manufacturer to bring LightSquared compatible receivers to the marketplace is Javad GNSS. Read the rest of this entry →

Updates & Upgrades

In this week’s Professional Land Surveyor Weekly Roundup, I want to explain a few site upgrades in addition to this week’s summary.

If you are a regular visitor here, you’ve no doubt noticed a new look. You also might have found some of the site features updated, too. What’s happening, simply is that we are performing a major upgrade to the site software. It, no doubt, will take us some time to make every necessary update and upgrade, but we will try to keep the inconveniences to a minimum. All will be soon in order.

But there’s more: Seeing as we were already upgrading the site software, we decided this was the time to improve the site look and function, too. So, don’t be surprised to see a new look and layout rolling out this week. When all is said and done, we’re confident you will find the new updates, upgrades, and look well worth a few hiccups while we make these improvements.

Javad GNSS Forward Looking or Industry Shill?

Javad GNSS, Inc. has announced that its GPS receivers can now compensate for and integrate with the controversial LightSquared network. As has been widely reported, the LightSquared network will emit radio interference which may render useless existing GPS receivers, particularly high-precision units typically used by land surveyors.

Does this development shown forward-thinking by JAVAD GNSS or does it reflect a companies willingness to act as an industry shill? I suppose, only time will tell.
