AutoCAD Civil 3D 911: AutoCAD Civil 3D 911 Drag & Drop Shapefiles

In this AutoCAD Civil 3D 911, I want to show you something that I accidentally stumbled on last week, which is that in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013, at least, you can simply drag and drop GIS  shapefiles into your Civil 3D drawings.

There’s also a bonus video for members beginning at the Associate Member level.

I was working on a site analysis plan for a client last week and I was using a few GIS datasets that I had never used before. To see if each GIS shapefile was of any use to me, I inserted them using the standard Map Import commands (see the bonus video). Most of the shapefiles I was testing out did not have any useful data near my site (but not all!), which frustrated me because of the amount of time each import process – and then the undoing – took.

So I got to thinking, why can’t I just drag and drop the shapefiles directly into the drawing? Well, it turns out that you can!

Here’s my video showing you how to drag & drop shapefiles into AutoCAD Civil 3D:
