5 Winning Strategies To Running A Professional Land Surveying Business

I'm hoping that you all had an awesome week last week. News on the economy was mixed, with private sector jobs showing another small gain, while the jobs market, overall, is anything other than awesome. I did hear, over the weekend, that one pundit is predicting that the housing market will double in the next two years pulling us out of this recession. Sounds good to me!

How are you making out in these times?

While I've seen an uptick in the economy, and I'm grateful for it, it's nothing to make me think that we're out of the woods yet. The flow of money is loosening up, a little, and people are increasingly more willing to spend a few of their hard-earned money on things, like professional services. It is, however, a bumpy road to recovery with weeks looking up, and others not cooperating so much.

Is technology the answer?

Last week I posted the Professional Land Surveyor Survey-Business Conditions Survey for August 2010?, and had a few lively discussions about the economy and running a land surveying business. One land surveyor asked me what I thought was a winning strategy in these times. That's a good question!

Immediately, I began to think about implementing technology and the like, which are generally all good ideas. But after giving it some thought, and knowing that it's the basics that often matter the most, these are my answers:

5 Winning Strategies To Running A Professional Land Surveying Business

  1. Get and Be Organized. And, Most Importantly, STAY Organized!
  2. Find and Implement Efficiencies - Personal, Structural, and Procedural.
  3. Be Productive With Your Time. Get More Done In Less Time Without Sacrificing Quality.
  4. Success Attracts Success. Meet, Interact, and Learn From Those Who Are Already Successful.
  5. Follow The Numbers. Develop, Track, and Use Financial And Productivity Metrics To Drive Your Business.

OK, so everything on the above list:

  1. Applies to any business,
  2. Are good strategies for personal as well as business success, and,
  3. Are based in good old-fashioned common sense values.

And yet, these five areas are exactly where I see many people, land surveyors or not, consistently fail, personally and professionally, by not executing on these basic concepts. Am I perfectly executing all of these strategies 100% of the time? NO! Do I work on them daily with a plan, goals, and tracking? YES!

Also, am I trying to do all of this on my own? No! I read and try to learn from others, along with adjusting for what's working and what isn't working. It's about understanding process, creating systems, and knowing a lot about what makes you tick. We all make thousands of decisions every day - why to do some things and why not to do some things - and only by choosing to do successful things that meet your goals, instead of putting off important things for example, can you achieve your success.

I'll be writing more on the above 5 Winning Strategies, process, goals, tracking, plans, and success in future posts here, and if you noticed, I've been doing a soft "roll-out" of Premium Membership on this site, where I'll be going into much more detail.

Technology is only a tool

So where does technology "fit" into these concepts: Technology is only a tool to get things done, it's not a magic-bullet. No amount of technology will be able to overcome your being unorganized, inefficient, unproductive, unwilling to learn, and being inattentive to how your business, or life, is running.

If implementing technologies provide you the tools to meet your objectives, then go for it. I bet, however, you'll find that at least 80% of your being successful will come from improving yourself and how you get things done. Look inward to improve outward.

Thanks and be brilliant!
